Preface |
Image understanding is at the high level of image engineering, and spatiotemporal image understanding is a relatively new research direction in image understanding. Its goal is to use various spatiotemporal technologies to analyze and make meaningful explanations and judgments on human activities and behaviors in the objective scenes reflected in images. This book mainly deals with modeling, detection, recognition, reasoning, and interpreting techniques related to various levels of spatiotemporal image understanding, from action primitives, actions, activities, events, to behavior. This book mainly focuses on introducing the principles of these technologies, discussing and analyzing relevant methods combined with research results, and providing a summary of recent research progress. In addition to the Chapter 1 for introduction, this book consists of 7 chapters, which respectively introduce spatiotemporal point of interest detection, spatiotemporal motion trajectory analysis, classification and recognition of actors and actions, modeling and recognition of subject activities, detection and classification of human object interaction relationships, behavior analysis and inference based on various networks, and detection and judgment of abnormal events. This book focuses on introducing different levels of work and recent developments in the field of spatiotemporal image understanding. In Chapter 2 to Chapter 8, each chapter first introduces the working principle and provides an overview of existing typical technologies, summarizes their characteristics, and classifies them. Then, several specific methods are analyzed in detail (including the overall flowchart, algorithm principle description, specific process steps, experiment and effect examples, related method comparison, etc.). Each chapter also introduces the latest developments in related technical fields, summarizes their characteristics and categorizes them, which can help readers understand some of the latest development trends. On the one hand, this book can serve as a professional course textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students in related disciplines/majors, helping them master the basic principles and carry out scientific research activities, complete graduation projects and theses. On the other hand, it is also suitable as a research reference for researchers in related fields. The book consists of 8 chapters, with 30 sections (sub-headings) and 72 subsections (sub-sub-headings). There are a total of 88 numbered figures, 56 numbered tables, and 191 numbered formulas. The book provides a list of more than 350 references cited (half are published in the 2020s), and more than 300 subject terms used are listed at the end of the book for indexing and for facilitate further accessing to related literatures. The book contains considerable amounts of contents based on the research results of many students who have obtained their academic degrees in the author's image engineering research laboratory. Many of the images and curves of the experimental results come from their dozens of research papers. I am very fortunate to work with them and to make discussion with them. I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to scientific research, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors to contribute more and better to the development of science and the progress of society.
