She received the B.S. degree from Harbin Shipbuilding Institute, Harbin, China, in 1982, the M.S. degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China in1984, and the Ph.D. degree from Liege University, Liege, Belgium, in1989. She is currently a professor in Tsinghua University, Beijing China. Her research interests include picture coding theory and methodology, video codec VLSI architecture, and 3D visual signal processing and coding.

She serves as a Fellow of IEEE , Technical Committee member of Visual Signal Processing and Communications in IEEE CAS Society(VSPC TC, 2003-), the VSPC TC secretary(2006-2008), and the VSPC TC chair(2008-2010); she serves as a member in IEEE CASS Circuits and Systems Education and Outreach TC (CASEO TC, 2011-), and a member in the IEEE SPS Multimedia Signal Processing TC (MMSP TC, 2005-2008), a member in IEEE SPS Image, Video and Multidimensional Signal Processing TC (IVMSP TC, 2012-2014), and a member in IEEE SPS Signal Processing Education Standing Committee (SPESC, 2012-). She serves in the Picture Coding Symposium Steering Committee(2001-) and served as a general co-chair for the 25th Picture Coding Symposium (PCS2006). She served as task chairs in several international conferences, such as ICME(financial chair2007, publicity chair2008), MMSP(publicity chair2008), ISCAS(track chairs,2007-2010), PCM(local chair2001), VCIP(local chair 2005), ICIP(financial chair2017)… She serves as associate editors in Elsevier Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, and Journal of VLSI Signal Processing Systems, Springer; she also served as Guest Co-Editors for the special issue on “Multiview Video Coding” in IEEE-CSVT(2007), for the special issue on “Hardware Implementation of Video Codec” in the Springer Journal of VLSI signal processing systems (2007), and for the special issue on “Video Coding: HEVC & Beyond” in IEEE-J-STSP(2013).
